The internet has always been a place for marginalized communities to find community and support. It’s especially true for black men who, for decades, have been at the forefront of technology innovation and development. And now more than ever, it’s time to recognize the work of these visionaries who are changing our culture and shaping the future of finance through digital assets.
In July 2022, 25% of Black Americans owned cryptocurrency, 15% of white Americans, and 17% of Hispanics. Web3 is an ecosystem built on decentralized technologies that allow people to interact directly without relying on third-party intermediaries like banks or governments. It’s an evolution of the internet where users are in control of their data and their experience. Black men predominantly lead this movement and have been excluded from traditional financial institutions but now using blockchain technology to create new wealth opportunities for themselves.
Many African Americans are among a growing number of investors, entrepreneurs, artists, and others latching onto digital currency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). And for numerous Black investors, crypto investments are seen as a new route to wealth and impartiality. It also allows them to dive into the growing arena of NFTs, which expects to remake industries like gaming, collectibles, and music. Blockchain technology can help create wealth opportunities for black men while changing how we think about money, power structures, and identity politics in society today. If they do not give you a seat at the table, I’m a firm believer that you need to build the table and stop asking them to sit at it. Black-owned crypto businesses, projects, and organizations are putting wealth back in the hands of the community. Just imagine how many other culture-shifting innovations await us as more Black founders get comfortable relying on DAOs or other crypto-native solutions to back their ventures.
